Timber framing is an
ancient and unique type of post-and-beam construction. In a
timber-frame building, the horizontal and vertical timber supports are
fastened together by intricate joinery and sturdy pegs, without the
need
for nails or other metal reinforcements. This wooden "skeleton" bears
the entire structural load, so neither the exterior enclosure system
nor the interior room partitions assist in supporting the roof or
carrying weight.
As a result, those exterior
and interior elements may be handled with far greater freedom and
flexibility than conventional building allows. Timber frame designs
lend themselves to cathedral ceilings, open plans, and innovative
arrangements of interior space.
Unlike log houses, traditional timber frames expose their wood to the inside only, and not to the punishing elements of wind and weather. Timber frames are beautiful, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient.
A traditional frame may serve as the structure for nearly any type of building, from a simple rustic cottage or garden gazebo to a three-story mansion with winding stairway, king post trusses, hammer beams, and decorative finials. Throughout the world, cathedrals, farmhouses, and even barns that were handcrafted many centuries ago still remain structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing today. Their integrity is a tribute to the skilled accomplishment of masters past.
Legacy Timber Frames honors and carries
forward this worthy heritage. We, too, build homes and other structures
to endure--to stand proudly against time and weather, securely
sheltering your family, business, or community as it continues to grow
and prosper. And by taking advantage of modern building materials and
sophisticated technology, our craftsmen are able to combine the classic
traditions of mortise-and- tenon joinery with state-of-the-art
insulating methods to create practical, as well as beautiful, homes.
